Is the Slimy Feeling After Cleansing Beneficial for Your Skin?

The slippery or slimy sensation left on the skin after cleansing offers a contrasting experience for different users. For some, it feels like a hydrating touch filled with moisture, while for others, it leaves an unpleasant feeling that cleansing residues might still remain on the skin.

Why the Slimy Feeling Occurs After Cleansing

This phenomenon stems from the specific chemical actions of surfactants included in the cleanser. Amino acid-based surfactants, such as Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate, or non-ionic surfactants like Decyl Glucoside, have relatively large molecular structures that result in low skin penetration. Instead, the hydrophilic (water-loving) parts of these surfactants adsorb electrostatically to the skin surface and strongly pull in surrounding water molecules. The thin hydration shell formed during this process is the true identity of the slimy feeling we perceive.

Functional Advantages of the Hydration Shell for Dry Skin

The hydrophilic film adsorbed onto the skin surface minimizes frictional irritation during the cleansing process and acts as a shield to inhibit the rapid evaporation of moisture that occurs immediately after washing. This mechanism is highly beneficial for dry skin, which typically has a weak skin barrier and dries out easily.

Limitations in Cleansing Power and Precautions for Use

However, these characteristics also involve objective disadvantages. Due to the property of adsorbing onto the skin surface, the cleansing power may be relatively weak, and since the molecular structure is large, there are limits to removing impurities deep within the pores. Therefore, it is not suitable for removing base makeup or sunscreen. Individuals with oily skin, characterized by high sebum production or pores that clog easily, should avoid these slimy formulations.
