Skin Feeling Thirsty? Check Your Habits!
Even if you weren't born with dry skin, many everyday habits can strip away moisture and leave your face feeling parched. If your skin constantly feels tight or becomes increasingly "stretchy" and uncomfortable with age, it’s time to audit your routine.
1. Applying moisturizer only 'twice' a day.
Dry skin lacks natural moisturizing factors due to low sebum secretion. Instead of just morning and night, it is vital to reapply moisturizer throughout the day before you even feel the tightness. Keep in mind that feeling tightness in the afternoon is a warning sign that your epidermal layer is drying out and your skin barrier is being compromised.
2. Using 100% mineral (physical) sunscreens.
Mineral sunscreens are a great, low-irritation choice for sensitive skin. However, their active ingredients—Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide—are inherently powders. Even when dispersed in a cream, their powdery nature can leave the skin feeling dry. Try reapplying moisturizer on top of your sunscreen, or switching to a hybrid formula.
3. Relying on setting powders and makeup fixers.
Fixers and powders are designed to "flash-dry" to set your makeup. In that process, they can actually suck the water right out of your skin. If dryness is a concern, skip the fixer and swap the powder for a hydrating cushion foundation for a dewy finish.
※ While many believe makeup dries out the skin, the right base makeup can actually act as a protective layer that helps prevent moisture evaporation.
4. Using harsh cleansers and double-cleansing.
Cleansing washes away not only impurities but also essential oils. If you have dry skin, you should choose a cleanser tailored to your skin type rather than following trends. Unless you are wearing heavy makeup, it is better to avoid excessive double-cleansing.
5. Using products with ethanol or peeling acids.
Toners containing ethanol provide a temporary refreshing feeling and help smooth skin texture, but for dehydrated skin, it's like a thief stealing your moisture. This is especially true for skin with a damaged barrier, as it lacks the protection to handle the irritation. Similarly, while exfoliating/peeling ingredients create a smooth surface, they should be avoided when your skin is dry/dehydrated. Be kind to your skin's top layer—it's there to protect you!
